What makes a Hero?

My definition: A hero is someone who is a role model to individuals. He/she knows what the right thing to do is and follows through with that action.

Class comments: someone right, doesn't change, selfless, love, determination, willing to die, superhero, athletes, ...

Listened to Mariah Carey's "Hero" -- A hero is yourself, someone who has strength, helps on follow his/her dreams, hope...

Read "Recalling Brother's Bravest Hour" by Mike Lupica -- Danny Suhr questioned the particulars, role model to siblings and friends, firefighter, he was advanced [when it comes to football], wanted to be in the front-line, willing to die for others, pushed himself during rough times, believing he can conquer anything, and he was well-liked?

Listened to Nickelback's "Hero". Looked at "The Heroic Journey" handout of Star Wars.

Other "Heroic Journey" examples:

  • Harry Potter
  • Finding Nemo
  • The Matrix
  • Kung Fu Panda
  • Batman
  • Superman
  • XMen
  • Captain America
  • Rocky
  • Hunger Games

How/does pop culture effect our view of a hero?

Higher standards, overcoming fear, innate ability, extrinsic/intrinsic ability to overcome fear, some sort of power, takes action, accepts responsibility, aspects of normalcy, marginalized/hidden/oppressed end up being the hero--come out, alter ego, appealing, not portrayed in the everyday--have to do something huge.

Quotes from Albert Pujols on being a hero to his family.
Consistent in your good-ness, it's the little things, has values/morals, discipline.

Listen to Skillet's "Hero". We all need heroes! Sometimes you have to be your own hero, they're just in time,  fight for what's right.

Watch "Fireproof".
What makes a hero, and what who is mine?
A hero is someone who takes the initiative to do what is right despite the trials that may come. A hero of mine is my friend Trisha. She has been there to help me through many of life's problems, and always pursues God strongly when trials come her way, not letting her mood or own desires get in the way.
