Melany's AOW

Pre-reading discussion:

  • The first subjects are necessary for everyday use. Although art may not be used everyday, expression, creativity, fun, and more should be encouraged and at high priority.
  • I am not good at art. I am very meticulous, and it takes me a while to finish a project--the end result is not very good...
After reading the articles:
  • I wasn't aware A.E. wasn't used in the 70/80s.
  • 44% of Elem. schools lowered art and increased math and reading instruction.
  • We are (or should be_ teaching kids to be human and teaching them how to think creatively, just as we are teaching students math and reading.
  • There are many benefits than previously thought.
"Students flourish when creativity drives learning."
  • I would agree. Students will be very willing to participate and will be involved in active and fun learning.
"Art increases writing skills and develops literacy and math/number skills."
  • This is interesting to me. It goes to show that there does no need to be such a focus on JUST math and reading--there are other factors that should be considered.
Art >4 years increase SAT scores (by 40-50 points in some categories.
  • Wow. Sounds like all schoold should include art in their education. However, the higher scores depend on whether the students choose to take the art courses or not.
