  • Not always entertaining
  • A guide
  • Usually subject-specific
  • Objective?
  • Flat tone
  • Expensive
  • Over-complicate things
  • Not detailed enough
  • Not essential for learning
  • Require different kinds of reading

What can we do to make textbooks accessible to students?

  • Connect to prior knowledge
  • Model our teaching strategies
  • Online version
  • Activities to go along with reading
    • Hold their thinking
    • Purpose
  • Make textbook relevant
  • Know what you want them to get out of it
  • Use alternate text
  • Discuss
