Teachers are 'failing to help pupils develop a love of reading
Summary: Students are falling behind when it comes to English scores. There is an obvious correlation between how students do in elementary school and how they do in high school.
This article shows the importance of what elementary/primary teachers do. They set the foundation for student learning. As a secondary education teacher, I hope that the students are getting the best education they can from the time they enter the school to the time they get to my classroom. I know that in an ideal world this will work, but it probably will not be the case.
Also shown, parents play a key role in the success level of the student. Parents were encouraged to read to their kids and reports will be sent home showing "their child's reading age as well as their national curriculum level". Hopefully these methods will help get parents involve and help them to motivate their children.
With students failing in their latter years of schooling, it is important to get them hooked and interested in English early on. Methods need to be put in place where they will retain the information they are learning.
